Who We Are

We are a dedicated team of scientists and engineers working to push the frontiers of AI research. We innovate and produce breakthroughs in the core areas of AI, transforming our efforts into world-class CRM products and solutions to power our customer success.

Vision and Mission

Asia is a region of fast growing innovation, businesses, and talents. Our Chief Scientist, Richard Socher, former founder of MetaMind, believes that Salesforce Research’s presence in Asia is critical to enabling Salesforce’s goal of becoming a thought leader of AI in the region. Managing Director Steven Hoi, who co-authored over 200 publications in top-tier journals and conferences and an IEEE fellow, leads our Singapore lab to build a world-class research team to help define the future of AI innovation.

While we continue to focus on high impact publications and advance our Einstein AI technologies, we also hope to build a vibrant ecosystem and nurture future AI talents through collaboration with universities, government agencies, and other AI consortium to build a strong talent pool with diverse capabilities, thus enabling our customers and developers to be more successful in this region.

Our Wider Ecosystem

We believe in providing opportunities for everyone to achieve their potential through internships, scholarships, and research grants. Besides collaborating with top universities across Asia, we also partner with government agencies and non-profit organizations to support our growth by finding the right talents. Industrial PhD Program

The IPP is an initiative by Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore to support joint partnerships between Salesforce and top Singapore universities to build and nurture a pool of AI talents to prepare them for R&D roles in the future. Undergraduates who are finishing their studies and keen to pursue PhD in local universities are encouraged to join this program.

The selected candidates will be mentored by a company supervisor from Salesforce and an academic supervisor from the university. While pursuing their PhD studies, the IPP candidates are required to work on Salesforce’s industrial projects and expected to spend at least 50% of their time over the 4-year period of this program at Salesforce’s premises.

Research areas include Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Computer Vision, Big Data, Data Mining and Business Analytics, Ethics in AI, AI for Good etc.

Since the IPP is an initiative driven by the Economic Development Board of Singapore to nurture home-grown talents, it is applicable to only Singapore citizens and permanent residents who meet the universities’ prevailing admission criteria to their research programs.

We look for outstanding students with excellent GPA from a relevant field of study e.g. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Maths, or other highly quantitative fields. Research experience and publications are preferred but not mandatory.

Most importantly, the applicant must have passion in Artificial Intelligence and the related areas such as Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Reinforced Learning, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Computer Vision, AI for Good. The list is not exhaustive.

* Please keep a lookout on the various portals of your universities for important dates and steps.
We have two intakes yearly - January and August.

Applicants should submit the following documents to the universities which you would like to pursue your PhD studies.

  • CV
  • Research statement of purpose
  • Transcripts of academic qualifications
  • Publications, if any
  • At least 2 recommendation letters from your supervisors or professors

The university will then assess and screen the applicants before sending the shortlisted applicants to Salesforce for our review. If you are shortlisted for Salesforce’s interviews, you will have to go through a coding test and two rounds of interviews. The whole process from interview notification to final outcome may take 3 weeks to 2 months, depending on a variety of factors.

Can I apply for the IPP while my Permanent Resident application is pending?
Unfortunately, we only accept applications from Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. We have two intakes yearly in August and in January so you can apply for either intake once your permanent residence is confirmed.
Do I have the freedom to choose my own research topic?
Salesforce will understand your interests, capabilities, experience, and work with you to select a research topic that is suitable for you and also meets our research needs. We will work with you to select a research topic of your interests or capabilities.
Can the academic supervisor be from other faculty besides School of Computing? (in the case of NUS).
The academic supervisor has to be from School of Computing or the school that collaborates with Salesforce on this program.
Am I bonded to Salesforce?
No, you are not bonded to Salesforce. This means, if an IPP trainee drops out mid-way during the program, he or she does not incur any financial penalty.
What happens if I do not obtain my PhD in four years?
As Salesforce is highly selective, we are confident that our chosen candidates will obtain their PhD within four years. EDB’s funding to this program is limited to 4 years. Should the candidate requires a longer period of study, his or her tuition fees may no longer be supported after 4 years. In some cases, the candidate may be asked to consider other options. Salesforce will review on a case by case basis.

There are many benefits associated with this program. If you are selected into this competitive program, you get to:

  • Work on cutting edge research
  • Build critical skillsets and knowledge for future R&D roles
  • Develop innovative techniques and solutions for real world, large scale problems
  • Publish and present high quality research papers at top-tier conference or journal venues
  • Access to abundant computing resources e.g. GPU
  • Earn a salary with CPF included, fully-paid tuition, plus many benefits similar to a full time employee
